Twinkie: (n.) a small spongy cake with a cream filling in the center; slang – a cute teenage girl (California); Asian-American slang – Asian by genetics but westernized in appearance, thought, and action.
Having grown up in Southern California for most of my life, I have always thought that I was very traditionally Asian…in everything.
This all changed with the four years I spent in Massachusetts (college) and another eight in Ohio (medical school and graduate school).
When I returned from being away from So. California after twelve years, I noticed a change in my thinking that I didn’t register until I returned to what feels sometimes like the second home of Koreans. LA, I think, boasts the largest population of Koreans outside of the motherland.
Don’t get me wrong. I still observe the Asian traditions–respect elders, celebrate Korean holidays, eat Asian food which I love!, etc.–but the desire for increased independence and autonomy is something very American and definitely not something my parents really drilled into me as a kid. Sure, they challenged me to pursue excellence–actually, they demanded it–but this mental shift from a culture centered on community to one centered on the individual is something decidedly American. During my time in college and post-college, I learned to define certain boundaries that were to dictate my future interactions with my various circle of friends, family, and colleagues.
Now, you’re probably asking what all of this has to do with our website…heh heh.
I wanted to tell you of a cute word I recently heard. LOL…bear with me as I’m about to get a bit corny…OK, a lot corny.
So a few days ago while I was talking to one of my church college students who also follows this website, she happened to mention that she’s a “twinker.”
Yeah, for a second, I thought I had read her gchat incorrectly, but she explained that since I’ve affectionately given myself the online name of Snoopy’s Twinkie because I love Snoopy and have embraced my twinkieness, it only makes sense to her to refer to the “Musings” community–herself included–as twinkers.
I don’t know about you, but I thought that was the cutest thing I have heard in a long while. I’m no longer a “Twinkie” but a “Twinker”! Thanks, Jane, for the new identity! 😉
Twinker: (n.) a Kdrama fan who reads “Musings of a Twinkie”
