Running Time: 101 min
Synopsis: First love? Only love! Following his father, an exchange professor, Kim Min moves to Japan. One day at a local shrine, he meets a beautiful, long-haired Japanese girl (Nanae Sasaki). She is an aspiring painter and Min falls in love with her at first sight. Despite the cultural and language barriers, Min and Nanae become fast friends. As their feelings for each other grow, they visit many sites together. When Min’s grandmother is suddenly ill, Min returns to Korea to be with her. Unfortunately, he cannot get in touch with Nanae and he becomes anxious. After his grandmother regains her health, he hurries back to Japan to look for Nanae, but she is nowhere to be found.
Musings: This movie was a joint Japanese/Korean production. A majority of the filming was done in and around Kyoto, Japan. One day I will actually purchase it as the film quality on line does not do this movie justice.
This is definitely one of my favorite Lee Jun Ki movies. Truthfully, it’s my favorite Korean romance movie period. I loved the flow of the story. It followed the usual pattern of meeting, falling in love, heartbreak and of course meeting again. Sadly, as he thought she had left him without a word, we find out later she did tell him, not only did she tell him but she had been waiting for him every year as they had promised on Doldam Street on the first snow of winter. Now how romantic is that? I have watched this a couple of times and each time is like the first. I always see details I missed once before and I’ve never been bored watching it. I’m going to keep this short and sweet. It’s not a very long movie but boy do you wish it was! Well worth watching. Enjoy!
