Synopsis: The international city of Busan is a popular vacation spot on the East Sea coast, drawing one milion visitors to its beaches every year. Four years ago, Man-sik went deep-sea fishing and lost a co-worker in a tsunami. He now leads a simple life running a small sushi shop.

Kim Hee, a geologist and an expert on tsunami research, discovers the East Sea is showing signs of activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 tsunami.

Yoo Jin is in charge of the Haeundae Cultural Expo who returned from America one year ago to the area with her young daughter.

Despite his warnings, the Disaster Prevention Agency affirms that Korea is in no harm of being hit. When he discovers a super tsunami starting in Tsushima, Japan is headed stratight for the Korean peninsula, he quickly heads down to the coast. While the vacationers and citizens of Busan are enjoying a peaceful, hot summer day, a super-tsunami is headed straight for Haeundae.

Musings: Ha Ji Won without makeup is still beautiful. The beginning beach scenes were of the Haeundae I’ve never seen in the dramas.Man that is a lot of people! It had some funny moments in the beginning, especially when In-Kwon rescued Hee Mi after she fell in the water.

What follows is your standard disaster movie with some seriously scary and sad moments in the film.

Overall, it’s worth watching if you like dramatic special effects and the use of screening used in most disaster movies. The power of the waves and the damage that can be witnessed is especially well portrayed in this film. The fact that in a split second, your home, family, even an entire city can be swept away is a scary sight to see. Lee Min-Ki (In-Kwon) and Gang Ye-Won(Hee-Mi) were truly the best. This was the moment that I first took notice of both actors. When they are on the screen, you will laugh and cry! The awards this film won were well earned. Enjoy.

2009 (46th) Daejong Film Awards – Best Production
2009 (30th) Blue Dragon Film Awards – Technical Award and Most Popular Film

  1. Hi, NewKDramaAddict!

Thanks for the review! I like your theme of ‘Action Movies’ this month. Any coincidence that the last 2 films reviewed have starred Lee Min-ki? I am not complaining . . .

I caught a Korean movie on a long-haul flight once and I would love to hear what you think of it, mainly because it was so sad. And the ending was over the top to (I thought) to generate a waterfall of tears! It was titled ‘Harmony’, about a choir formed in prison. Have you seen it?

  2. NKA,
I watched it last night. It was a fun movie to watch. The CG in this was not bad at all. Min Ki and Ye Won stole this movie from the main folks. The movie was 3 twinks, over all I had a good time watching it. Look forward to next week movie. You are right Ja Won is another natural pretty lady. That is why I like the ladies I have talked about. My Mom use to say even a old barn looks good with a new coat of paint. When you can wing it natural that is saying something. I have seen some Korean and American actress’ that look like death warmed over with out there war paint lol. You done did good NKA rofl

    1. That’s high praise coming from you, Russ. And I promise, August will be your ‘special’ ladies in review. Have to watch some more of their movies.

      1. Well thanks NKA that is really nice of you to do. I have been home sick this week and the movie last night was good meds 🙂
Any fun movies from the past you can suggest? Cause it is me and my Tablet
Between power naps lol. Thanks again

  3. Is the theme of the month action, or Ha Ji Won? Or it comes it pair? LOL

Thanks for the review, disaster movies are usually not my type, but I did watch this one for Ha Ji Won 😛
