Movie Monday: Rough Cut (2008)

Starring: So Ji Sub as Gang-Pae and Kang Ji Hwan as Su-Ta

Rating: R, subject matter and a lot of violence

Running Time: 113 min

Twinkies: 3 1/2 stars

Sorry for the lateness of Movie Monday. I must blame it totally on Secret drama with Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum! I was so totally immersed into the drama that I completely and utterly forgot!! For now on, I will do my posting BEFORE a marathon!

Synopsis: Gang-Pae (So Ji-Sub) is the #2 rank in his mafia organization, violence has been his main staple in life. Even though he has a violent nature, Gang-Pae has a softer side and loves his movies. Su-Ta (Kang Ji-Hwan) is a popular actor who has a similar violent nature and recently was responsible for putting one actor out of commission while filming a fight scene.

One night, Gang-Pae hears that Su-Ta is drinking in the same bar and he orders one of his men to get Su-Ta’s autograph. When the short-tempered Su-Ta refuses at first, this leads to a confrontation between Gang-Pae and Su-Ta. Soon after, Su-Ta critically injures another actor while filming a fight scene and filming is halted because no other actors are willing to perform alongside the short tempered movie star.

Out of desperation, Su-ta remembers that Gang-Pae mentioned he performed as an extra in a film before and offers him the co-starring role. Gang-Pae is willing to take the part, but only if they are to do the fight scenes for real.

Musings: Big Warning for the violence in this movie! Admittedly, this is not the best of the best movies but what I always find endearing about So Ji Sub movies is that he really plays the tough guy well. I’ve watched this several times and I’m always surprised how I see something new I missed.

But make no mistake, you can’t go wrong watching So Ji Sub and Kang Ji Hwan in a movie together!!! This was a movie within a movie and both main characters have a problem with distinguishing reality from fiction; there’s just no turn off switch!

Both Ji Sub/Gang-Pae and Ji Hwan/Su-Ta are so intense and that intensity plays so well off each other. If there was never a better time to have the subtle warning of “Don’t try this at home”, it was definitely during this movie. The fight scenes were rough, tough, and vividly real. One day, I hope they make another film together.

For the final fight scene, I wonder how many cuts it took. I even got tired watching them, it was that intense. If you are looking to watch something violent, then this is so the movie to watch!!! It is great!!!

  1. Loved this movie! Yes, despite its dark content. The ending was quite chilling, though. It took me a few hours to shake the visual of SJS in the last frame from my memory. -.-

    Another great review! Thanks!

  2. Thanks for the review @NewKDramaAddict. I will have to def check this out and take advantage of my Nexflix subscription. Sounds like a very intense movie and the premise sounds interesting as well.

  3. Thank you for the review!
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED this movie~!! The bromance between Kang Ji Hwan and So Ji Sub was great, I need to see them in another drama or movie together!
It was violent, yes, but somehow true to life. In the end it’s really easy to end up dead.
I also enjoyed the music a lot in this movie, the OST has some great songs.
