Movie Monday – My Palpitating Life (2014)

Starring: Kang Dong Won as Dae Soo, Song Hye Kyo as Mi Ra, and Jo Seong Mok as Han Ah Reum

Rating: PG-13, subject matter

Running Time: 117 min

Twinkies: 5 sparkling stars

Synopsis: Based on the novel “Doogeundoogeun Nae Insaeng” by Kim Ae Ran, the movie is about a young couple, both of whom are 17-years-old, learns that they will have a baby. The couple feels uneasy and they wait for the birth of their first child. Finally, they have a beautiful boy.

Their baby is named Ah Reum and the couple learns that he has Progeria syndrome, a rare genetic defect that will cause their baby to show advanced aging from an early age. Ah Reum grows up to become a 17-year-old boy who likes reading and writing. He has the mind of a 17-year-old, but he looks like a withering old man. He becomes interested in a girl his age.

Musings: I have been wishing and hoping for Kang Dong Won and Song Hye Kyo to once again star together in a movie (Camellia-Love for Sale was their last); of course, any hope of a drama is dashed as my favorite Korean movie star has left the drama world for 11 years and truthfully, his strength is in his movie acting. However, the subject matter for this movie already projects to the viewer that Ah Reum would die. Anyone who is familiar with the disease, Progeria, already knows that children with it do not have a long life span.

This drama was very good at taking away that sadness even before the end. Watching Ah Reum as he lived his life to the fullest was a testament of being surrounded by loving and caring parents. So few movies focus on children, let alone adults with incurable diseases but the benefit of watching this movie is to show you real heroes.

To Ah Reum’s parents, for maintaining a smile and keeping their son happy. Dae Soo was so immature and was like a child himself but Mi Ra was the rock and soul of the family! Both made sure that they never showed any despair or sorrow in front of their son right up until his death. When we think about it, not most of us can but this movie brilliantly shows how a young couple can live and let their son also live despite his disease.

This movie can easily be watched by anyone; however, as it deals with teen pregnancy, that explains the movie rating. But make no mistake, what you will see is not only a great movie but also perfect casting! It doesn’t get better than this. My man, Kang Dong Won has another winner!!
