Synopsis: Young Bin (Lee Dong Gun) is an obnoxious man who treats his girlfriends and others rudely while Ha Mi (Han Ji Hye) is a naive woman who mistakenly thinks that Young Bin is the perfect man for her. Playing on Korea’s obsession with assessing people by their blood types, this movie pokes fun at the various misconceptions while exploring the ups and downs of relationships.
Musings: I saw this after I became a fan of Lee Dong Gun; I had seen him in Lovers in Paris and Sweet 18. Anticipating the pairing of Lee Dong Gun and Han Ji Hye again, especially since it was rumored that the two actors were dating at the time–and later proved true–I saw this movie with mixed feelings. It’s definitely a light and funny romantic comedy, but I think I expected much more from it and was subsequently disappointed. However, since I don’t think that’s really fair to the movie, I am rating it a 4 instead of a 3 or 3.5. It really is a fun little movie with which to start the work/school week.
The main plot device centers on ridiculing Korea’s then obsession with blood types, and this satire at examining how silly people-typing (via blood typing) can be provides some hilarious moments. Tack onto that the trials and tribulations of dating–and dating a “bad” boyfriend at that–the movie does a solid job of adding to the genre…nothing new, but nothing bad either. The only thing I didn’t care for was the “happily ever” ending that suggests “bad” boyfriends will reform. OK, perhaps the movie didn’t say horrible boyfriends will reform, but it certainly gives that vibe. I personally wanted to tell Ha Mi, “Ditch that moocher!” LOL.
Overall, though, I enjoyed the movie, which is why I’m selecting this as this Monday’s “Movie Monday” choice. If nothing else, one gets to see Lee Dong Gun, and who can complain about that? 😉
