Movie Monday – Montage (2013)

Starring: Uhm Jung Hwa as Ha Kyeong, Kim Sang Kyung as Det. Cheong Ho, Jo Hee Bong as Det. Kang, Yoo Seung Mok as Chief Det. Kwak, and Song Young Chang as Han Chul

Rating: R, subject matter and some violence

Running Time: 119 min

Twinkies: 4 stars

Synopsis: A criminal who disappeared 15 years ago, a crime that repeats itself 15 years later and the moment has come at last! A kidnapper disappears 15 years ago. 5 days before the statute of limitations is over, the kidnapper puts a single flower on the scene of the crime.

Days later, crimes very like the ones 15 years ago repeat themselves and a grandfather who lost his granddaughter, a mother who lost her daughter to this monster and a detective to dedicated his life to this unsolved case – get a chance to bring him to justice.

Musings: Talk about a criminal being smart enough to use the police’s propensity to “blame the victim”? Once again, a movie featuring the sensational Uhm Jung Hwa has drawn me in. She is such a consummate and impressive actress! The first time seeing Kim Sang Kyung was in both The Tower as well as May 18 (both movies reviewed here). This is a very dark film so I must warn you, anyone sensitive to child kidnapping, murder and language might want to stay away. Amazingly once again, the families of the victims have to take things into their own hands.

What is even more surprising about this movie is that this is the director/screenwriter Jung Geun-Sub first movie ever. The movie’s pace is very well handled and edited considering it is almost 2 hours long. I found myself almost to the end and unlike most crime movies, I had no idea who the criminal was. Usually there are hints given here or there. If there was during this movie, I totally missed them. Yes, the ending or last 15 minutes will surprise you. Good movie; great cast.

Trailer is available on on Hancinema Website only. The movie is available on several sites. Ask me if your interested.
