Movie Monday: Marrying the Mafia (2002)

Starring: Kim Jung Eun as Jang Jin-kyeong, Jung Joon Ho as Park Dae-seo, Yoo Dong Geun as Jang In Tae, Park Sang Wook as Jang Kyung Tae, Sung Ji Ru as Jang Seok Tae, and Park Geun Hyung as Jang Jung Jong

Rating: PG-13, subject matter and some violence

Running Time: 113 min

Twinkies: 3 1/2 stars

Synopsis: A man wakes up one morning to find a beautiful young woman sleeping nude beside him. Neither of them can remember the previous night’s events. After trying to walk away from the incident and get back to his normal life as a lawyer, he quickly learns several important facts: 1. The girl is the daughter of a big crime boss. 2. She was allegedly a virgin before he had his way with her. 3. He can either choose to marry her, or be murdered. The circumstances are very suspicious, and it seems possible that he’s somehow been framed into this position. But even a lawyer would have trouble talking his way out of this one-especially when the judge and jury are not at all impartial, are not his peers, all carry weapons, and want to kill him if he says the wrong thing.

Musings: To give you an idea how funny this movie can be, when Jin-kyeong and Dae-seo meet for lunch after her brothers have basically beat Dae-seo senseless, Dae-seo makes the statement:

Dae-seo: With this kind of beating, we’re talking at least a four week diagnosis
Jin-kyeong: That’s strange…guess they were tired

From there, the movie goes from “Meet the Gangsters” to “We Got Married, Gangster-style”. The comedic genre movies are rare and far between on my completed movie list, but this definitely fits well into the genre. The jokes were subtle and sometimes corny; the comedy, at times, slap-stick but I think I enjoy this type the most. Poor Dae-seo, he didn’t know what hit him until it was over and done. When a mob boss makes up his mind, along with the brothers, you basically have no choice! But it was fun to watch!

Trailer is available on on YouTube Website only. The movie is available on several sites. Ask me if your interested.
