Starring: Jo In Sung (Spring Day, What Happened in Bali, Shoot for the Star, Nonstop 2, etc.), Kim Sa Rang (Secret Garden, Love to Kill, etc.)
Twinkies: 4 out of 5
Synopsis: Chul Soo (Jo In Sung) is a college student who is only interested in girls, a personal characteristic that one of his professors finds appalling in such a bright student. As a result, the professor issues an ultimatum that Chul Soo either join a joint North-South Korean historical excavation team in Yeonbyun or face the dire prospect of not graduating.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the 38th parallel, Young Hee (Kim Sa Rang), a daughter of a North Korean diplomat decides to join the excavation team as well. As the divided country meets together for a momentous joint archeological adventure, Chul Soo and Young Hee discover that love can supersede political boundaries and lead to some historic discoveries, personally and culturally/historically.
Musings: I thought this selection would be fitting since we are in the midst of watching The King 2 Heart that focuses on the ever-complicated inter-Korean dynamics. And how can I not love a movie that features the “classic” Korean names of “Chul Soo” and “Young Hee,” two names made famous by Korean elementary school-level readers.
I saw this movie right after Spring Day when I was still “obsessed” with Ko Eun Sup. LOL. This is a much younger Jo In Sung, replete in all his boyish youthfulness. 🙂
Although the story delves superficially into the complicated politics of the two Koreas and blurs the lines of “reality” quite blatantly, the adorably cute and comedic moments more than make up for the “clichéd” storyline. At least that’s what I’ve been telling myself these past however many years since I’ve seen it. After all, I couldn’t possibly have adored this movie on the Jo In Sung factor alone, right?
That just wouldn’t be mature of me, veteran movie and drama viewer that I am. 😉
And this one is uploading on a Monday as planned…just for you, KStyle! I hope you enjoy! It’s a fluffy piece of funny and cute. 😉
