Starring: Joo Ji Hoon (Goong, The Devil, Five Fingers), Kim Soo Ro (God of Study, A Gentlemen’s Dignity), Byun Hee Bong (Ohlala Spouses, Man of Honor, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho), Park Young Kyu (I Do I Do, Protect the Boss, High Kick), Lee Honey (Immortal Classic, Pasta), Kim So Hyun (Ma Boy, Rooftop Prince, The Moon that Embraces the Sun)
Running Time: 120 minutes
Synopsis: Joo Ji Hoon plays two roles: Slave Deok-Chil and Prince Chungnyeong. Prince Chungnyeong is a reluctant monarch. After his father, King Taejong, played by Park Young Kyu, decides that he is tired of his nephew, the current Crown Prince’s bad behavior, he then names Prince Chungnyeong as the new Crown Prince. At the same time, we have Slave Deok-Chil (also played by Joo Ji Hoon) who currently is a slave for a family whose daughter (Lee Honey) he loves.
What follows is a really funny version of the Prince and the Pauper! The Prince runs away after a chance meeting of the slave, Deok-Chil, by stealing his clothes. But what the Prince is not prepared for is the life of a slave. I just start smiling when I think about some of the basic things we experience everyday that are new to him. On the flip side, Deok-Chil marvels at being the Prince. But as with all Korean dramas and movies, the dark side creeps in, in the form of Minister Shin Ik-Yeok (Byun Hee Bong). The Minister finds out that the Prince is not the Prince, and you can guess what happens next.
Musings: This was Joo Ji Hoon’s first project after returning from military service as well as his blacklisted period following his arrest in 2008. I just recently watched this movie, which I was patiently waiting to pop up on one of my favorite sites. I was so excited to see Joo Ji Hoon again because I loved Goong and especially the movie, Antique. The great thing I can say about this movie is that he is really, really funny! It was a real treat to see Joo Ji Hoon in a comedy again.
*Warning* There are some seriously gross bathroom humor in this, but I guarantee that you will be laughing as hard as I was while watching it! And for the youngsters, there is one bath scene, not revealing but again, very, very funny!
As this is my first review and movie recommendation, please be gentle but ENJOY!
