Marathon Drama: 1% of Something (2003)

Starring: Kang Dong Won (The Taoist Wizard), Kim Jung Hwa, Han Hye Jin, Lee Byung Wook

Synopsis: The story revolves around Kim Da Hyun (Kim Jung Hwa), a school teacher who attracts the interest of a retired tycoon. He meets her on the subway and immediately realizes with the sharp acumen that made him a successful business that Da Hyun is the perfect girl for his grandson, Lee Jae In (Kang Dong Won). Unfortunately, Jae In has no intentions of marrying or pleasing his grandfather. However, when he is trapped into a preposterous situation by his grandfather, Jae In goes on the attack and assumes the worst of Da Hyun–she’s somehow bewitched his grandfather–thus starting the beginning of an unpredictable relationship, which ironically enough spawns other relationships.

Musings: I saw this series soon after it came out and absolutely LOVED it! It took me a while to finally track down a DVD box set copy of the series, but once I found it, I snatched it up without much thought for the price. Thank goodness, the price was reasonable–under $20.

Anyhow, if you love family dramas with romance and comedy, this series is definitely one you want to check out. Although all the actors have been known to display some very serious acting chops, they tend towards the light and silly in this series. Incidentally, this is the series that really launched Kang Dong Won and Kim Jung Hwa, at least in my opinion.

I enjoyed the various relationships the series highlights–grandfather-grandson, brother-sister, father-daughter, mother-daughter, cousin-cousin, friend/sister, etc.–and although the romance figures heavily in the series, the other relationships are what really made me watch this series in literally one sitting. I couldn’t help myself really…one episode sort of merged into the next one, and before I knew it, it was already morning and I had to get ready for work. LOL. Yeah, that day was absolutely a blur. LOL. I’d like to think that I’m a lot wiser now with my time management…heh….

Overall, this is one of my highly prized series that I hold near and dear to my heart. I hope those of you who decide to watch it love it as much as, if not more than, I did!

Note: Sorry about this week’s lack of posts. I’ve been having Internet problems, residual swollen finger issues, and the craziness that usually accompanies the start of a new semester. I’m hoping to post more as my finger feels better. Thank you for all your get-well wishes regarding my little “digit.” They were much appreciated! 🙂

  1. Thanks for picking this drama. I have watched this a longtime ago and also got a DVD so i could watch it everytime i feel like it. I loved both the female leads most especially Han Hye Jin. Have you seen Be Strong Geum Soon Soon, its 100eps. but was able to finish it in one and half days with a little sleep in between. Cant help it and the lead actor is Kang Ji Wa (did i get his name right). Same with 1% you’ll laugh and cry and you ll feel the love they have for each other. But the storyline is more intense than 1%. Thanks again!! Keep it coming!! Take care!

  2. Snoopy, I watched this and it was by chance. I had just finished watching I’m Sorry I Love You and I really needed to peak my spirits after being thoroughly depressed by that drama. I happened across this and like you I watched it in 2 days. I thought it was quirky and such a cute stories as the two main characters developed feelings for each other. I also highly recommend it.

  3. I LOVE THIS DRAMA!!!!!!!! It is really one of my all time favorites. I have been searching for a copy of this drama and found one but the subs were at best disgusting.. Would love to get my hands one..any idea where????? Unfortunately by the time I started watching K-dramas, this one had been out a couple of years.

The story is great and what is not to love about Kang Dong Won? His facial expressions are priceless and how cute was it when he actually sang to her. The “evil” rival seems to be type cast. I’ve seen her in several other shows and she always plays the same role with the exception of Protect the Boss.

Highly recommend watching this for a light and easy romantic story… Whenever I need a lift, this is my go to drama!!!!!

  4. I like this series too! I watched it because I liked Kang Dong Won in “Too Beautiful To Lie”, which is a great rom com movie to watch (co-starring Kim H Neul). Like you, when I get into any drama, it becomes a marathon to finish it asap. But I’m having to ration my time out nowadays.

  5. This is one of my all-time favorite k-drama. Love all the casts..Re-watching this drama again. Kang Dong Won and Kim Jung Hwa such a adorable and cute couple. I’ve just notice that from ep 20 -25 Kang Dong Won loves to hug Kim Jung Hwa. haha
