Goblin: Episode 13 Squee Moment

This scene just doesn’t get old! *indulges in another squee moment*

For those of you who have already watched today’s episode, my selection of this particular scene as the “Squee Moment” should come as no surprise. It features the long-awaited/long-dreaded sword-pulling scene, and our master writer Kim Eun Sook beautifully untangles many of her well-crafted knots in this 3-minute clip…!

Before I discuss the clip itself, I’ve got to give the crew in the special effects department kudos on its work here. I’ve always appreciated the glowing icy-green ember-like effect of the Goblin sword in previous episodes, but this raging volcanic-flaming sword is something else! The arc! *revisits the beauty of the flaming arc in mind’s eye*

Now let’s discuss in brief the sword-pulling moment; our writer certainly knows how to time things well. Evil Eunuch Park can’t die by the Goblin’s sword…until the “actual” sword embedded in Kim Shin’s chest is pulled out and used to slay Park, effectively ending both of their unnatural lives on earth. Thankfully, Kim Shin realizes this earlier on in the episode and doesn’t flinch when Park takes possession of Eun Tak’s body.

Then in a show of solidarity and synchronized teamwork, Reaper and Goblin work in concert with each other to draw Park out of Eun Tak and slay him, respectively. *sigh* Anyone else regret that these two have such a complicated and bloody history between them? Oh, the deep bond of brotherhood these two could have had! Not to mention the great things they could have accomplished in their time for ancient Korea! *sigh* At least they unite to vanish Eunuch Park in the end.

I think the most touching moment for me, though, is the ever-so-brief yet poignant second when Eun Tak sags to the ground after Eunuch Park leaves her body and Goblin keeps her hand on the hilt of the sword, fully intent on using her hand to pull the sword out himself. *sobs* The look of horror on Eun Tak’s face when she realizes what he’s done…!

Let me know if you’re still reeling from this scene as I! And although we’ll have to wait a week before Episode 14 airs, I don’t think the one-week wait is such a bad thing. Personally, my brain and heart are probably going to need that much time to process the “death” of our beloved Kim Shin.

Here’s hoping for an awesome conclusion to this story as we await the last three episodes! 😉

  1. His courage was awesome! I cried for her, for him, for our poor Reaper. At least they had some wonderful moments of bromance and caring for each other. Will Reaper wipe her memory of her Goblin? Where will they go from here? Sob

    1. We should totally engage in a major sob fest together! :'(
The good news is that I have complete faith that our Goblin will be returned to us, so I’m not too teary-eyed. 🙂 As for the next three episodes, I REALLY don’t want her memories wiped out. Somehow, I don’t think Kim Eun Sook is going to go down that route; wiped memories will negate all that our Goblin and his bride have gone through!
The wait begins…5 more days until Episode 14!

  2. HI there. The scene was awesome. The journey from beginning to end of episode 13 was poignant.

I watched the end of episode 13 alternating between chanting “No!, No!’ No!” whilst hiding behind fingers and going “booyah” celebrating bromance.
    And then the tears fell.

I tell you I am not one to cry easily – my family calls me stone hearted 😛 – but THIS!!!! I actually teared up.

When I first heard episode 14 was to be preempted – my reaction was – why??? Now, I think it’s a brilliant move – whether intentional or not, taking into account live shooting. It allows us to wallow in our grief in that spectacular death and to also suffer the numbness that Eun Tak must feel.

And THEN bring him back – please. Really. Please. And as Kim Shin.

    1. I’m thinking that our writer isn’t going to pull one of those cheap plot tricks on us and will instead bring Kim Shin back as Kim Shin (with memories intact). Otherwise, I’ll think dark thoughts of her as a writer since I’ve already given her kudos for her brilliant planning and timing in her narrative. 🙂 She wouldn’t disappoint me now at this late stage in the story, would she? Ha! As if she’s writing this story for me and my pleasure alone…! 😉
All kidding aside, though, my knowledge of her previous works leads me to suspect that she’ll unravel the mystery of Kim Shin’s return with polish and sophistication. Here’s hoping! Can’t wait to see Episode 14 and hear your thoughts on what is to come!

      1. So far, the writer has done a wonderful job of drawing me (personal opinion here) into the narrative. Contemplative scenes and all, as they all amount to the sum of the story. We are talking 900+ year old being and Reapers and deitiy(ies) walking around in broad daylight, bearing the gravity of previous lifetimes, or in Shin’s case, a never ending one. Loved it from the get go. So I’m hoping that the writer give it an epic ending.

By the way – have you watched/ are you watching Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo? I don’t see it in the list on the sidebar.

It’ll soothe the aching while waiting for Friday.

        1. My sidebar is woefully out of date. I need to update it. But yes, I’ve been watching Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo here and there. It’s adorable!

  3. Not sure if you have seen the last 3 episodes.. have not been able to comment here for ages but I thought I’d need to get this off my chest…

A heartbreaking farewell to someone I loved before and loved even more the 2nd time around (I meant Gong Yoo, first in Coffee Prince, now here in Goblin). How can I get over the depressing ending of Goblin!!??? I feel like I’m Euntak who now needs to be on pills for the rest of my life becoz of the very sad ending of Goblin. It is only now I realized that the writer truly & literally meant him to be THE LONELY and shining Guardian/ Goblin!

I have no doubt Gong Yoo is a great actor, this drama has proven he is a BRILLIANT actor, his last bit of sticking his tongue out to the Class Prez/ Euntak’s now lawyer friend from highschool made me giggle so, but there were so many moments I cried like cRAZY. I was so crazy about the last 3 episodes, I watched the unsubbed versions, watched the subbed versions, read the soompi forum comments, read the recaps, watched selected Youtube clips, watched/listened to the Round & Round OST repeatedly, each time tears would trickle down my eyes unknowingly. That’s how bad it was for me. 🙁

On a happier note, glad that it got breaking ratings in Korea, there is a 2 episode special airing next week, cast & crew going to Phuket Thailand for a well deserved vacation & Gong Yoo has confirmed to come, watched the youtube clips of the wrap up party & GY so cute even if he is not in designer clothes! I guess I can still count my blessings!! Happy Blessed Sunday! 🙂

    1. Hey, Ellen! I’m so glad that you watched this, too! 🙂 I’ve been watching most of my Kdramas these days via YouTube clips…I know…It’s so sad, huh? LOL However, the good news is that I was still able to get the main gist of the story so no complaints here. 🙂 I have to agree about the ending…so sad, especially since it’s implied that he’ll have to be alone again once she dies…and wait again for her to return to him in her 3rd and 4th (final) reincarnation. Hopefully, if we extrapolate to that end, the gods will be gracious and allow him to die just as they allowed our Grim Reaper his mortality so that he could enjoy his life together with Kim Sun for her 4th and final reincarnation, the glimpse of the future that Goblin was able to see for his sister.

Ah well…one of these days, I’m going to have to go back and watch the last three episodes in their entirety. 😛 These days, though, I’m just trying to stay afloat with grading and lecturing during the intense winter term. Thank goodness I gave up my second class and am only teaching one class; otherwise, I’d be going a bit crazy right now. LOL

BTW…are you watching Hwarang? Stay warm up there!

      1. I started watching the first episode but did not manage to get past the 15 minute mark. I still cannot move on after watching Goblin, the ending just left me feeling empty and sad. 🙁 I know the ending hints that the 2 ill fated lovers will somehow get their happily ever after, but I wanted to have seen that in the actual drama. I am watching Father, I Will Take of You and started Introverted Boss (but managed only half of the first episode). Wish you all the best for the rest of the winter term! My daughter is in university and I know how stressed she is every single term and I guess, the same thing goes for the professors, too!

        1. I wish your daughter all the best in her school work! 🙂 I’m nearing the end of my winter term…only 2 more weeks to go before I submit grades! 🙂
You’ll have to let me know how you like Father, I Will Take Care of You and Introverted Boss. I watch a clip here and there of Father, I Will Take Care of You, primarily because of Lee Tae Hwan LOL, but I’ve stayed away from Introverted Boss since I don’t need any more things to distract me right now. LOL

  4. *peeks in*

Hi this drama is amazing and its been months since ive been on here but i just wanted to say that because i loved it so much and and and and and yeah

i cried a lot like my perfect winged eyeliner was absolutely wrecked not #noregrets

fell in love with gong yoo all over again <3 recap the rest grace i want your thoughts 🙂

    1. Hey, Wol! Good to hear from you. 🙂 As much as I would love to return to recapping full episodes, I think my recapping days are over. :'( So sad, huh?

In any case, I’m glad that you dropped by and are still watching a Kdrama here and there. 😉 Hope you’re staying warm up there in the north!

      1. Awww I understand. Crazy how our lives have changed over the years. I feel like I have no time where did it all go? I am at school for most of my day and then I go home to sleep. It’s a sad life but I think I’m advancing to…some kind of destination? haha don’t really know. No regrets yet! Except maybe those morning lectures I subject myself to (>->) why do I hate myself lol

How about you Grace? Got any early classes you gotta drag yourself out of bed for? LOL

Also it snowed in Chicago and I wore a dress with no tights so I froze lmao need to dress appropriately for winter and stop being in denial…

But as long as there are sageuks and Lee Joon Ki, you will never see the last of me muahaha!
Ok no but seriously I lurk the drama world for some new content every now and again. Recently watched Train to Busan with our lovely Gong Yoo. Such art. Such zombie. Such gore.

You can take the girl out of kdrama but you cant take the kdrama out of the girl

I dont think that made sense but did I claim to be a writer no
