This scene just doesn’t get old! *indulges in another squee moment*
For those of you who have already watched today’s episode, my selection of this particular scene as the “Squee Moment” should come as no surprise. It features the long-awaited/long-dreaded sword-pulling scene, and our master writer Kim Eun Sook beautifully untangles many of her well-crafted knots in this 3-minute clip…!

Before I discuss the clip itself, I’ve got to give the crew in the special effects department kudos on its work here. I’ve always appreciated the glowing icy-green ember-like effect of the Goblin sword in previous episodes, but this raging volcanic-flaming sword is something else! The arc! *revisits the beauty of the flaming arc in mind’s eye*
Now let’s discuss in brief the sword-pulling moment; our writer certainly knows how to time things well. Evil Eunuch Park can’t die by the Goblin’s sword…until the “actual” sword embedded in Kim Shin’s chest is pulled out and used to slay Park, effectively ending both of their unnatural lives on earth. Thankfully, Kim Shin realizes this earlier on in the episode and doesn’t flinch when Park takes possession of Eun Tak’s body.
Then in a show of solidarity and synchronized teamwork, Reaper and Goblin work in concert with each other to draw Park out of Eun Tak and slay him, respectively. *sigh* Anyone else regret that these two have such a complicated and bloody history between them? Oh, the deep bond of brotherhood these two could have had! Not to mention the great things they could have accomplished in their time for ancient Korea! *sigh* At least they unite to vanish Eunuch Park in the end.
I think the most touching moment for me, though, is the ever-so-brief yet poignant second when Eun Tak sags to the ground after Eunuch Park leaves her body and Goblin keeps her hand on the hilt of the sword, fully intent on using her hand to pull the sword out himself. *sobs* The look of horror on Eun Tak’s face when she realizes what he’s done…!
Let me know if you’re still reeling from this scene as I! And although we’ll have to wait a week before Episode 14 airs, I don’t think the one-week wait is such a bad thing. Personally, my brain and heart are probably going to need that much time to process the “death” of our beloved Kim Shin.
Here’s hoping for an awesome conclusion to this story as we await the last three episodes! 😉
