First Impressions: Marriage, Not Dating (2014)

MND 1.1

Cable channel tvN has churned out some notable drama series in the past few years–Answer Me 1997 and Answer Me 1994 to name just a few–and this newest addition to their Friday-Saturday lineup hints at joining that growing list as one strong rom-com contender for this summer.

You can watch the raw video of the episode here

Plot:

It’s the cliched story of a rich young man who doesn’t want to marry (portrayed by Yeon Woo Jin) and a “common” girl who does (portrayed by Han Groo) and how these unlikely two meet, fall in love, etc.

Musings:

Despite the classic yet overused genuine-girl-meets-rich-arrogant-boy story, this series seems to have a solid handle on telling a compelling and entertaining story. It doesn’t hurt that leading the cast are two strong actors from today’s new generation of young bloods.

Han Groo (I adored her in One Warm Word opposite Park Seo Joon, another strong actor) and Yeon Woo Jin (He first registered on my Kdrama radar as the tragic Joo Wal of Arang and the Magistrate) lead the cast, well supported by veteran actors like Kim Hae Sook (I absolutely LOVE her!) and Kim Kap Soo.

Anyone smell a hit rom-com on tvN’s hands? 😉

So far, I’ve only been able to catch a brief glimpse of the series (video clips below, courtesy of YouTube and tvN) but I really like what I’ve seen. Both the acting and script are solid, ranging from the comedic to the dramatic and back again as agilely as any Kdrama lover can hope. 🙂

MND 1.2

Just look at these two as Joo Jang Mi (Han Groo) laments Gong Gi Tae’s (Yeon Woo Jin) interference during her big romantic night with his friend, Lee Hoon Dong (Heo Jung Min).

I’m including a few of the released video clips of these two…Hopefully, you should be able to get a good idea of their chemistry together from these clips. Oh, and did I happen to mention that our youngest from 2AM (Jung Jin Woon) adds to the cuteness and fun of this series? 😉

Let me know if you’ll be joining me on this adventure…I think it’s safe to say that Marriage, Not Dating will be one of my new exercise dramas. 😉

Ki Tae runs interference at his friend’s (I already dislike this friend, Lee Hoon Dong) request:

Ki Tae delivers news to Jang Mi that Hoon Dong no longer wants to see her:

Jang Mi confronts Hoon Dong, needing to find closure…face to face:

  1. I will definitely be along for the ride. I caught it on joovideo raw and found viki is subbing it. I think it’s a good one.

    1. Hi, Mem916! I’m going to try to write something about this series, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to promise anything beyond that. Real Life can be a blogger’s nemesis at times. 😛

Anyhow, thanks for the feedback! I’ll definitely keep trying to include this series into my blogging schedule because I, too, love it! 🙂

  2. YAY! I’m so glad you did this! I wasn’t sure if anyone would write about this show! I loved the first two episodes and love forced marriage hijinks so I’m not really sure how this drama can go wrong since it’s leads already have me excited for their love story.

I really like them both here. Han Groo is as spunky as ever and wears her heart on her sleeve and I love that. I’ve always been a fan of Yeon Woo-Jin ever since Ojakkyo Brothers, but this is the first time I feel attracted to him. I like his character a lot and think that his acting & charisma is going a long way because, even though I think the character is well-written, he isn’t exactly the kindest of guys, but for some reason I like REALLY like him. I’m sure it helps that we have the assy ex to compare him to. Our second leads are great so far too, with the guy being especially charming.

I also really like the families so far and look forward to the interactions between them and the couple (what a rare sentence to write in dramaland).

Can’t wait for the marriage hijinks to ensue!

    1. Yes! I definitely agree with you! 🙂 Love, love, love this show! 🙂

I’m glad that you’ll be joining me for this Kdrama adventure! Here’s to more hilarity this Friday… 🙂

  3. Snoopy’s Twinkie ~

Thank you for taking up this project. I’ve seen Ep 1 and like it. Congratulations to Han Groo for her first leading lady role.Yay!

I liked the confusion about who Ki-Tae’s mother was. I was trying to place the actress, (Kim Hae-Sook), it’s Manager Hong from Suspicious Housekeeper.

    Plus, Yoon So-Hee!

    1. Hi, John! Welcome to our community of Kdrama lovers! Thanks for your kind words and comment. Like you, I’m thinking that this series will be a great boost for Han Groo who is such a talented young actress. 🙂

    1. Oh dear…I guess as a new reader you don’t know about my “odd” idiosyncrasies, huh?
As some of my readers will be quick to tell you, I like to stay “offline” when I’m out and about, so I usually only blog either in the mornings or in the evenings. Unfortunately, this means that when readers–new and old–leave comments, I usually take a while to reply, especially when Real Life gets crazy for me. However, I hope that this delay doesn’t make you feel any less welcomed. I’m excited that you’re joining us on this Marriage, Not Dating adventure!
